Mahoning Valley Christian Service Camp
BUILDING THE LEGACY
FOR THE NEXT 70 YEARS
We are thrilled to update you on our Building the Legacy campaign to prepare Mahoning Valley for the next 75 years of reaching and teaching young people for Christ's kingdom.
We have completed the renovation of the original camp building (the old girl's dorm and cafeteria) into a five-room motel-style facility, which marked phase one of the Legacy Campaign.
In January of 2018, Mahoning Valley was able to finish paying back our debts, which completed phase 2 of the Legacy Campaign.
Phase three of the Legacy Campaign includes fundraising for a new pool.
Mahoning Valley is beginning a three-year Campaign to raise funds for a new pool. Currently, the state has expressed that we have the oldest spring-fed pool. The pool was built in the 1940s as a watering hole for livestock in a cow pasture. We love hearing the stories, and one sticks out: “When I was a teen, I had to walk through a cow pasture to get to the watering hole.” The camp was located at Antler Point, a golf course in Rush County in the late 1930s. It was called the Weekleys and soon moved to where we are now. It was established in 1943 at the beginning of Mahoning Valley Christian Service Camp. Later, it became a 401c3 in the 1950's.
There was a period when the pool was closed due to not meeting state regulations, and many were bussed to the city pool! In the 2000s, the pool opened again and was filled with concrete to take it from 15 feet deep to 5 feet. It is not a fully functioning state-regulated pool fed by an underground cistern to this day. We lose thousands of gallons of water a summer, and the upkeep is demanding! But the pool plays a vital role in the lives of young people as we spread the Good News!
How many of you were baptized in the pool?
How many of you could be a kid for a week and have the time of your life?
How many of you remember climbing the lifeguard tower and playing games in the valley?
How many adults connected with youth and deepen a relationship to show them the love of Jesus?
We are currently campaigning for $650,000! Stay with me and follow our 3-year financial journey for the New Pool Campaign!
